For As He Thinks In His Heart, So Is He

Commonly quoted words around the world, words of pure wisdom and yet, ignored as just another cliché, another verse. There is so much power in those words! So much and yet, so few people realize what it means.

Everything starts in the mind first. Everything!

Take soccer for example. You put 2 able-bodied persons onto a soccer field. Both have not played a game of soccer before, they’ve only seen or watched it. Place these two on the field with a mix of people who have been playing soccer for years. The team of players and the two newbies meet for the first time on the field. One of them thinks that he can’t play well because he has never played a game in his life. The other thinks he can’t play well as well as the other players too but he might as well just play. Who do you think will eventually have a good time?

Take note, these 2 are able-bodied persons. Both can play the game. If right now, you take a microphone and ask one of the players about which of these 2 new players is a total newbie and which one has played the game before – what would the answer be?

All of the players will instantly know. Even the spectators will know. Even YOU will know!

Why? Simply because, it is all in the mind. And it shows.

“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” - Proverbs 23:7a

We can use this saying to our advantage in our lives. Say for example again, if you have been playing soccer since you were young and you stop playing it for whatever reason, when the chance comes for you to play soccer, you wouldn’t be thinking that you can’t play soccer anymore because you already know you can do it. If you cycled before and you stop cycling, when you get to cycle again, it may take you some time but eventually, you’ll start peddling away and feel the wind in your face as you ride away.

Conversely, the saying can also work against us.

If we think that we will never be rich, no matter what riches come our way, we won’t be able to recognize it. If we think that we have to stick to our job, working 9 to 5 every single day to earn that pay check will one day make us rich, we’ll stick to it because we think it will get us to where we want to go – one day. One day we’ll get promoted. One day, we’ll get a big, fat bonus. One day, the CEO will finally recognize me for my efforts. That one day is a huge gamble for any of us to take.

The question is can we get rich and yet not quit our day job?

Ask yourself that. What is the very first answer that pops into your mind?

If you said “No”, then you’ve probably got a traditional mindset of working to become rich. It’s not wrong, it’s just traditional.

And if you said, “Yes”? Well, then you’ve probably got a mindset that’s already in place because you know some of the answers to that question. Only thing that matters to you is whether any of those answers that you know are actually working for you.

However, if you said “Hmm…. Maybe” Then you’re most likely on the edge of stepping out of the traditional way of thinking into finding how to make real wealth and riches happen for you. You’re probably a bit more open-minded to suggestions and methods in order to get wealthy and yet, still keep your day job.

Everything begins in the mind. So, if you want to become rich, your mind must first be renewed. Your concept of the rich must first change. Everything that was negative against the rich should now be turning towards the positive. This is the very first step and yet, the hardest to achieve. It is the hardest to achieve because no one else other than yourself gets to decide if you want to be wealthy or stay where you are today.

Think about it. Why then would there be so many people attending wealth seminars, read books on how to get rich, listen to audio tracks on making more money – and yet, only a handful of those people really succeed?

Because most of the people that go to such seminars, read such books, listen to such audio tracks, are convinced already that they can’t be rich and wealthy. They’re convinced that those who make it got “lucky”. Those that make it are really very, very smart. The money and time that they are spending on these things are useless – because they never accepted it. It may sound good. It makes them feel all high and mighty. Makes them feel that it’s possible to be rich. But their mind stops them from going where they want to go. Because they are already thinking, that it’s not possible for people like them.

“For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he”

  • That passage is so powerful. We are what we think for sure! That is the problem - many people want something, but until they first recognize, uncover and remove the beliefs that are holding them back they will never get it. If someone thinks that on a scale of 1-10 that they are any less than 10 then they will never acheive 10 things in their life. Until they realize that God made them a 10 and BELIEVE that then mediocrity is as far as they will go.

  • Mavarick:
You’re very welcome, Mavarick. Glad that you felt blessed by the message!

    Jennifer:
You speak the truth in your reply, Jennifer! It’s amazing how just simply believing that you are something or someone will change your life. As Jesus said, faith the size of a mustard seed is enough to move the mountains. I believe He was talking more in the terms of relativity rather than literal. If one has the mustard-seed size faith that he/she can change his/her mountains of problems in life, then it is possible!
