“We love to excel.”

“We are looking for people of excellence.”

Ever wondered what does the meaning of excel and excellence actually means? Does being nice and hardworking make you excellent? Is excellence measured by the amount of riches that one has in life? I only know what excellence means, and also the price to pay for it, after hearing today’s powerful message shared by Reverend Tan.

“Excellence means to exceed a given standard that is ordinary, average, terrible or unworthy” - Rev. Tan Ye Peng

This quote mentioned above might look and sound complicating, but I can assure you that it is not.

Let me share with you why.

Being excellent is doing things that goes beyond the call of duty. Instead of doing the required tasks that were assigned to you, we would do more than that. If they ask you walk a mile, walk two miles.

We go that extra mile

That is being excellent! Students, are you still studying? Are you complaining that your teacher is teaching things that are not in syllabus? Why not choose to stand out of the norm and be a person of excellence? Go beyond studying the things that may have not been required of in the syllabus! Gain that extra knowledge and up your learning skills by another 2 notches.

But you say, “I do not have enough time to learn things that i do not need!”

Let me share this interesting fact that we can start thinking about - successful people have the same amount of time as you. If they can be successful, why not you? If there are students who are willing to learn things that out of the syllabus and do score better grades in school, why not you?

The price to pay to be successful

If you want to be successful, there are three points you will have to take note. Oh yes, do take out your pen and paper. This is probably the most important part of the whole post.

1. To be successful requires your heart

You will have to tell yourself that you like your job in order to excel in your job. Similarly, you will have to constantly tell yourself that you love Maths in order to excel in Maths. Nothing will change if you do not start from our personal self.

You might not like your boss because he might be giving you too much jobs and he is angry most of the time but hey! Wait! Why don’t you change your mindset towards that unproductive thought, and find good points about your boss which you can learn from and start growing to love the job that you are placed in charge of!

Carry this on for a few months and you will definitely be climbing up that ladder!

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life. - Proverbs 4:23, New King James Version

The word issues here refers to geographical boundaries.

We have to start to get our heart strong and fill our emotional tanks, constantly motivating one another as we motivate ourselves, draw from the overflowing emotional tank that is full of encouragement.

Let our encouragement spring forth and cover wide areas in our networks of life from our social life, work life, and even at home.

2. Success requires the demand on our time

We should know by now that everyone of us are given 24 hours of time each day throughout our lives, and that we treat our time preciously with great care and concern to be productive everyday.

Time is an occurrence of events.

There are countless of things we want to do, to achieve, to accomplish everyday. And there are events that demands our attention from time after time again.

What we need is the ability to creatively manage our time. Let’s call this events management.

Our time can’t be easily replaced. Wait.

Time can’t be replaced at all!

One simple idea to handle our events each day is to write them down in a to-do list, letting us know the tasks for the day, and after finishing each job, strike them off the list until that piece of paper is filled with words that have a stroke crossing them out.

To get that victory rush, or that great sense of accomplishment upon completing all the tasks on that paper, obviously the tasks to handle are definitely not a huge general phrase like “cleaning everything in my room”.

Break that gigantic task apart, and instead write the task down in a much more simple form that we know we are able to finish without putting too much effort into it, and yet going the extra mile and exceeding our own expectations in the work. One example would be to write this instead of the previous one, “clear shelf #1″ as the first task, followed by “clear shelf #2-4″ as the next task.

Here’s a joke that you may have heard before:

Q - How do we eat an elephant?
A - One piece at a time.

Breaking huge tasks into smaller jobs makes one more productive, and definitely much more motivated after completing each work on hand.

3. There is demand on our money to be successful

To dream about something may cost nothing. To actually act out on our dreams do cost us something!

Working on our ideas requires our time, devotion, effort, people, and finances.

To make something turn into reality is a pricey task.

Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? - Luke 16:11, New King James Version

We have to start from where we are. What we have now can be the driving force, the stepping stone, and the initial spark that will send our dreams and ideas to the next level.

Let us be faithful in the starting amount that God had given to us.

Outdo ourselves each time

Strive to exceed expectations. Mainly exceed the starting expectations that we have made upon us step by step.

Know that we can outdo ourselves. Filling our emotional tanks through the encouragements we give others and give ourselves. Not worrying about what the next day will bring, but focusing on the tasks that we have on hand now and accomplishing them.

Dare to step up and learn new topics that may never be in our syllabus.

Dare to dream and outdo ourselves, clearing tasks and striking them off our to-do list victoriously.

Dare to face the demands and price to pay to be successful.

Let’s do that! Let’s have excellence in us.

Let’s over exceed our expectations. Subscribe and excel now!

Great post with many areas that demonstrate ways to develop excellence. One comment I have, is that you mentioned at the start that you have to love the thing (or tell your self you love it) you want to be excellent at. I definitely don’t agree with that.

Excellence is more of an attitude and you said it yourself, “Let’s have excellence in us.” You can develop an attitude of excellence and excel at things you don’t even like doing once you develop the dedication and process required to do so well. I can tell from the rest of your post you think that way as well, it was just something I picked up on…

Keep up with the great articles!

    “Excellent” post! :-)

And I agree with Mike. I don’t like housework (ha!) but I can still be an excellent housewife, because that is a standard I have set for myself.

Sounds like your pastor is a very wise man.

    Thanks!

  • Daniel -

Great post. Bible is a great source of inspiration as it teaches, like other religions, how to know yourself and prepare yourself for the journey of success. I really like the in depth article.
