Ever recalled the last moment you remembered about a person who last spoke to you on something that may seem like a normal day to day thing, only to hear it once, and forget all about it the next minute?
He or she maybe a professor, a teacher, or a distant friend, where time spent with each other with words and thoughts exchanged were not even more than a few minutes of a day or even a year.
And only to realize that the next thing you hear about the said member was of the person who was no longer living in this world and have step out from the flesh to the invisible eternity.
Unfortunately, we often don’t pay enough attention to people until something bad happens. - Hunter Nuttall
I recalled that it was during an internship with a top financial services company in Singapore for a six week period when I had my first big break in fine tuning my business skills when I was taken out from a prosaic administrative work and given a task to help them start and run a project which was to create a whole new business from scratch and to grow it. I had less than a month to do that before my internship ends with them.
The first week got me going about understanding the business proposal in less than a day, coming up with a good name by that evening, researching on how to starting a business legally in this country, and registering them after getting the address and logistics ready by the third day. Followed on by coming up with the marketing materials, design, and getting them to the printer and receiving the physical products by the fourth. The call scripts and copywriting were done by my manager who was also the executive officer for that project.
Then hiring and the selection was done to get the best telemarketers to help out in the project, and by the end of that week, we got the software prepared and was ready to go on the start of week two.
Within the third week into the project, we had nearly hit our projected target of a hundred companies in the retail, food and beverage, and personal grooming industries to partner us in our startup.
It was then another manager in charge of overseeing the project came to me halfway while I was working and told me this in view of many others. He said, “Daniel, you are the operations guy for this project?”
And when I nodded my head in agreement, he said this next sentence before he went off to continue his work.
“Great job. Keep it up!”
Being the first time I was involved in running and working on the operations side of a project that was at a larger scale to me, that encouragement came in timely. I gladly took it and continued on with the work, with the goal of getting the target that we set.
It was one of the first encouragement I had in a corporate world. I was nineteen then.
Of course, that project succeeded, and interestingly, I wasn’t involved in any of the meetings they had about the project, except that I arrived and the main information that I had was to start it and get it up and running.
My internship ended with them after the period ended, and I had to finish up the remainder of my academic years.
Near to a whole year later, I was again contacted to do a freelance project for them, and I went over to the office and walked down the halls that I once had the liberty to move about freely, before heading to the CEO’s office to get the details for my short term work.
Somehow, I felt that something was missing when I walked along the row where the management doors were at.
I did not know anything until I went back home and checked the CD that was given to me which was related to the task that I was to be doing then.
There was this folder that had the word “memorial” in it. A video clip was found in that folder.
As I watched the clip, a familiar face was featured prominently. He was smiling in the photo. Then slide after slide of more images, that had him with his colleagues and people working in his group enjoying their time together in outings and after work events and on their overseas trips that were their rewards of their achievements in their career, were shown in the memorial video.
It was that same person who had given me the encouragement that I had remembered clearly.
And he was gone.
However, that encouragement left an impression in the my life, which from that very day when he spoke that powerful sentence to me, got me to be more confident in running the operations of that business from scratch to the stage where the results showed success, and definitely was a milestone encouragement that gave that timely boost in morale that I needed.

I believe it is a good idea to have a list of milestone encouragements that you can keep in mind, with a story attached to it that allows you to remember and let it me a beacon that shines your way out of the rut or unproductivity in the down parts of seasons we may be in.
A milestone is a marking that we set on a path where we usually have came across and finished that road. It serves as a remembrance that we have walked through that certain place before and had overcame it.
I have a collection of my personal milestone encouragements that I would like to share four with you here as examples:
“You are terrible at this, but you will make a good entrepreneur.” as told by a final year project lecturer in charge. Which I took it as a compliment. The good part is that I graduated with a diploma (finally) after four and a half years in a course duration that was set for three years. I had aced a handful of modules in the entire duration that got me through with barely a pass in my Grade Point Average (GPA). It’s 2.07 out of 4 if you are curious about it.
“Number 7.” it was during a soccer trials for the under eighteens for a local club when I was fifteen, and I was eventually selected among more than a hundred people who turned up for the trials. That was my number on the training kit that I was wearing. I recalled that I had not more than one moment on the ball for that round, but when I had the ball, it was for a counter attack that had me going past three defenders and passed the ball through the forth for my team’s striker to go for the goal, that started from slightly in front of the midfield line.
“You will be a great person!” that was prayed over me three times in total with few different church leaders over three years during the times that they were activating and praying and with the laying on of hands. Today, one of my passions and personal mission is to make others greater than what they see of themselves. That had extended even onto this blog with a core statement of “Let’s Build People Up!”.
“I will give you some of my paintings Daniel.” this was a fairly recent event that happened in late March 2008, where an artist wanted to reward me with some of his prized works after a meeting with me. I recalled that before he came up to me, there had been an incident that got him overly furious and had him venting his anger loudly and all the way even when he stood in front of me he was still cussing and swearing. Which was then after five to ten minutes after I had talked to him, and sent him away only to be finally free after a couple of hours later. Before he left, he had thanked me at the gate of where I was working at and had wanted to present to me a few of his paintings, which due to the nature of my work, I had to refuse. Little did I know that he did return with what he had promised, but we had to politely refuse them. The next day we realized that each of those paintings were estimated to be in the range of thousands of dollars in value. That was a huge compliment and honor I ever had till today!
I am sure that you definitely have yours too. Some point in life you are sure to have one good remark said to you that had made your day.
If you are able to lift up your hand to which you had not heard or read anything good said to you recently this year or the months before…
I’d take the privilege to be the first to say this to you here:
If this is the first time hearing things like that, fantastic! Take it and keep it to heart.

Think thoughts that changes perspective from the negative to the positive.
Have better thoughts and self-confidence which will enable you to be more effective today.
Be diligent in the things that are going on in your mind.
Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life. - Proverbs 4:23, New King James Version

After doing so, we shall go one step further than becoming an excellent raconteur, let us join in together to be the ones that set our sights higher and build people up!
This is going to be a whole lot of fun and adventure for this work we are all in from here.

They should have told you “You are terrible at this, but you will make a good blogger!” Good job, Daniel. Lots of interesting stories, so how could I not stumble it? Thanks for quoting a non-famous person!

Haha. It’s better to quote people who are active in life now. Cos’ it allows us the liberty to interact with one another at the very present moment. :)

Daniel -
My first encouragement and advice both was given by my first boss in US. Greg Mudzinski is an amazing person. I used to go to his office with bunch of complains, mostly about things that were wrong. One day, he told me one sentence that changed my life. He said, “Shilpan, You are a smart young man. I don’t want you to waste your energy on things that are wrong but rather on how you can fix them.”

Hey Shilpan!
Gosh I’m still here. Didn’t expect the comments to come in that quickly.
You too are a huge inspiration, not withholding any form of compliments and encouragements to your friends. Your first boss wasn’t wrong at all. You surely have always been a smart young man. Even until now that both words “smart” and “young” applies. :)
Have a great day ahead!

Hi Daniel, it’s a very interesting message.
I have got several encouragement milestones in my life too! Those are from the people that look beyond my weaknesses, believe and have faith in me.
Here is a post where I’m sharing their faith in me.
http://www.reason4smile.com/2007/10/30/faith-in-others/
The last one is Shilpan, who commented in my article on greediness before.
You can choose to be encouraged by the people around you.
Great reminders for all of us,
Robert

Yo Daniel, this is indeed a one of the most encouraging message I’ve seen in my life.
I had a couple of milestones in my life too. I’ve been encouraged by many people in my life that i always took for granted of. They are can be either ordinary people or people in high positions. Nevertheless they taught me to have faith in what i am doing and never to let my past and defeats to hinder me.
And lastly to Shilpan and Hunter Nuttall, - I love your sites, they are so encouraging!
Way to go WE!

Hey Robert!
I personally believe that it saves a whole lot of time to mention the strengths of others and like by praising in an audience that will build one another up to greater effect!
Seen your article too. Glad that you had a wonderful supervisor that had helped you through that encouraging words. :)

Yo Jephthah!
You were the one who got me into the whole entrepreneurial mindset shake-up which helped me get my big break in the majority of the text in the starting paragraphs.
And I too remember two more instances where you were the one who said a few words that helped me see tremendous breakthrough results like the one in the gym where I was doing the leg exercise thing by pushing the weights with my feet. You said that “all things are possible”, and I got the whole weights lifted up gradually from 6 bars or so to the entire stack. That was one of the coolest experiences that I had!
Let’s continue building people up like how you had done so all the while. :D

All of you are awesome people! Thanks for the comments. Would love to see more of you all here often!

Wonderful post, as usual Daniel! It made me think of this verse:
1 Thessalonians 5:11
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”
Thank you, Daniel, for making it your goal to encourage others. You are making an important mark on this world! :-)
Blessings to you, my friend!
