This is a story of Jim and his loving grandma.
Jim could hardly see his parents everyday. As breadwinners of the family, his parents had to work grueling hours to fulfill the demanding deadlines upon deadlines of their job.
There wasn’t anyone else in his family to take care of Jim except his grandmother.
Everyday, Jim’s grandmother would wake up in the early hours, when the sun have yet to rise in the morning, to prepare breakfast for him and his parents.
She was also the one who made the daily lunch and dinners for Jim as his parents would not even be home till the later part of the night.
However, Jim doesn’t like his grandmother’s cooking. He had always been reluctant to eat his meals that his grandma had prepared.
Jim frequently complained that the food had no taste and he frequently skips his meal and eats out either alone, or with his schoolmates.
Despite having Jim’s rebellious attitude towards the area of having to take his meals at home, his grandma continues faithfully to make sure that the food had been cooked and served on time.
Then came this one day.
It feels like any other normal day, as Jim came home from school, his table was already prepared with the dishes cooked by his grandma - nothing unusual about that. Though Jim doesn’t feel like eating then, he managed to eat a portion of it because he was very hungry. After done having eaten his meal alone at the dinning table, he called for his grandma.
Seconds passed. There was no reply.
So Jim thought that she might be out chatting with the next door neighbor. And he went to check, but his grandma wasn’t anywhere near either.
At that very moment as he stood still wondering where could she be, his house phone rang.
Jim answered the phone.
Chills went down his spine. He froze upon hearing what the stranger on the other side of the line had to say.
He couldn’t put himself into believing the words that he had just heard.
“I am sorry Jim. Your grandma had just passed away an hour ago. We could not save her.”
Like a lost child, Jim was shocked to learn that his grandma had lost her life to stroke.
Jim was left alone heartbroken.
He was devastated.
Never did he realize that the lunch he ate alone in the place where it was supposed to be filled with joy, happiness and with people, was his last meal made by his dearest grandma.
Jim broke out in tears. The place he last stood in minutes have never felt empty and silent before. The voice of her calling out his name to come take his meals every day echoed in his mind. Then the sound faded away slowly as he came to accept that her voice will be dearly missed.
Jim will never have another chance again to thank his grandma for her love and faithfulness, with her constant care in preparing the meals daily even though he did not utter any word of appreciation to her all those days.
This is where the story ends. What’s your thoughts about this?
Let us change our mindset as we look towards having our meals prepared at home.
Many times in life we have taken things for granted. We tend to take things as though they are the way they have always supposed to be.
We might say, “it’s her responsibility to make all those meals and dishes day after day for Jim!”
How many of us here today have missed chances to thank people, to do good onto people or to make someone happy?
The fact is, all of us have missed many simple opportunities in our life to thank, to appreciate or to make a person happy.
It may be that it is true for most of us to accept that it’s the grandma’s responsibility as an elder in the house to take care of the young in the family.
Like what Jim had experienced, I’m sure that we might have similar experiences in life where we missed opportunities to show gratitude unto others. So why not today we thank a person and make him or her feel appreciated.
This one small yet powerful word could have made the entire difference - “thanks”.
That word could be the one that allows Jim to live on his life without regrets, making his house filled with warmth and loving grace.
There are wealth of opportunities for change to happen. I am sure that first chance will come minutes or even hours away from where you are right now.
Let’s make that change happen.
