An Affair With Nature

Editor’s note: This post was contributed by Tesla Lin, whom I’m glad to have on this blog with us. He brings along a strong ability to think differently, and present thoughts, views, and ideas about life and the things that goes around the world - and universe, in an abstract manner that is clearly shown in his writings.

My mind is empty and calm. My gaze is locked at a particular scene. The image set before me paused, as the birds continue on with their beautiful chirping along to the cool breeze of the evening.

Colorful butterflies flap their wings in smooth motion as they glided gracefully across the grass; they appeared to hop effortlessly across the fields. Gently, as small giants they are, the butterflies fought against the wind. Their acts of resisting the wind make them appear like little dancers dancing on the surface of water. As I watched the wide array of colors performing to a simple silent tune, I let my mind slowly drift into a trance.

Just when my mind was about to fade away into a magical zone, a tiny whisper of the wind with a tingle behind my ears pulled me back to reality.

The wonderful place is indeed worthy of me to meditate in. Numbers become conceptual as I began to lose track of the time.

While my thoughts were about to sink into another dimension, the rays of light from the evening sun began to press the shadow before me. I could feel the change in temperature - the addition of heat, while my shadow turns darker than charcoal.

I looked around me but saw no one else was there. My perspiration continued to flow and for that moment from a sudden awakening, I received a wild inspiration.

“Perhaps, I could take out my polo-tee.”

That temptation lingered in my mind. For once, I resisted against my desire of tapping the sunlight for a hint of solar energy to rest on my body. Yet the thought of rejecting that notion is equally repulsive.

My hunger to fulfill the crazy desire of having sunlight to shine upon me had caused an upset to my stomach. For once that animal in me groaned terribly while my mind forced its way to issue a command to stop a foolish act to-be.

I stood up immediately.

As I was about to leave the place, I saw a couple coming close to the park from afar. I was very blessed; I could have disgraced myself in public - that was what I thought.

I quickly made my way out of the park, wanting to disappear from the place as fast as I could.

However, I stop in my track near towards the exit. The strong smell of the living nature and the lush greenery sharpened my mind, I felt at rest. I realized that nature is indeed a beautiful art, leaving me wondering who is the artist of everything I see here today.

I always call Him the Higher Being. This Higher Being is not just an artist, but He too is also a conductor who has the almighty power to command the grandiose of nature as an amazing orchestra piece that is created beyond the works of men.

For now, I stand in awe of the wonderful living art piece that plays to another free-spirited theme that one would have to listen harder to be able to hear the amazing music performed all around with the surroundings.

That is my affair with nature.

  • I love the picture. It’s so calming and peaceful. I walk about 15 mins daily in order to get close to the nature. It may sound silly but I touch the plants and smell flowers and bow to the sun to energize my mind and body for the challenges of the day. I’ve stumbled.

  • I like the idea of meditating in the midst of nature, to get inspiration. I hope to do more of these since I stay so close to Botanic Gardens now.
